About registration hearings

Registration hearings are about whether places or objects should be in the Victorian Heritage Register, based on the recommendation of Heritage Victoria’s Executive Director.

These hearings give a voice to owners, managers, heritage experts and anyone interested in recommendations about places or objects.

We appoint a committee of at least three Heritage Council members to conduct the hearing.

Responding to a recommendation

Anyone can nominate a place or object for the Victorian Heritage Register. Nominations are submitted to Heritage Victoria.

Heritage Victoria assesses the nominated place or object using our inclusion criteria. Based on this assessment, Heritage Victoria's Executive Director makes a recommendation to the Heritage Council about whether it should be in the Register.

This is known as an Executive Director recommendation.

Participating in a hearing

Registration hearings are open to the public and the media. If you want to photograph or record a hearing, you will need prior approval from the Heritage Council.

Registration hearing protocols

Heritage Council Protocol 1 - Registration hearings provides detailed information about the registration hearing process. It covers the key steps and timeframes, and roles and responsibilities in the process.
